Marc Newson
Marc Newson is one of the most important and influential designers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Born in Australia, Newson has lived and worked in Sydney, Tokyo and Paris, and he currently lives in London where his company has been based since 1997. He has worked for a wide range of companies including Louis Vuitton, Montblanc and Nike, and is currently Designer of Special Products at Apple, where he was closely involved in the design of the Apple Watch.
Newson’s selection for the Conran Foundation Collection reveals a keen interest in manufacturing technologies and a fascination with materials and processes. His selection included, amongst others, a hand-made balsa wood surfboard, plastic Australian banknotes and a pair of Nike trainers made from a single piece of elastic woven together. As he explains, the process is designed to “eliminate waste and improve working conditions in the trainer factory”. His selection included three of his own designs; his award-winning MN02 bicycle for Biomega, some door handles and, humourously, an “exact rip-off, really badly done” version of his own Ikepod watch, bought from a Hong Kong market for $10.
